Stephanie Owens Interview by Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio Show

Lamitschka:  Music has many new fans throughout Europe who may be hearing about you for the first time. How would you describe yourself and the music you play to someone who has never seen or heard you?

Answer:  I am very passionate about people and using music as a platform to share my story and inspire others.  My music communicates what is important to me, and all of my songs give a glimpse into my real-life story.  I am a very spunky, outgoing personality, and I love engaging in meaningful conversations.  When I write songs, I always strive to make these characteristics evident in my music both lyrically and musically!

Lamitschka:  What kind of songs do you like to record the most?

Answer:  There are two types – I love singing emotional ballads, and then love high energy songs that allow me to really work the stage!

Lamitschka:  What is your favorite song among all the songs you have recorded and what's the story behind it?

Answer:  My upcoming single, “Slingshot”, is my favorite of all the songs I have recorded because I feel that it really taps into parts of my voice that the world hasn’t heard yet but that are the most “me” musically.  Before writing the song, I had a clear vision of what I wanted to say and how I wanted it to sound, so I am very emotionally invested in this song and excited for how I think it will resonate with others.  There are a lot of ups and downs generally in life as I am navigating a career as an independent artist in Nashville, so this song reflects my journey!

Lamitschka:  Do you have any interesting stories about how fans have been affected by your music?

Answer:  Yes!  My song, Little Girl in the Mirror, is about my former eating disorder struggles.  I always share my story when I sing this song.  It is such a humbling experience to hear that my song inspires others to keep fighting their own body image struggles!

Lamitschka:  Who inspires you musically and how deep do your musical roots run?

Answer:  There are a handful of artists who have inspired me musically over the years, including Natalie Grand, Nicole Nordeman, Martina McBride, and Carrie Underwood.  Their music and voices all greatly impacted my sound.  My parents also were the biggest inspiration when I was young because they are musicians too.  My dad was a high school choral director for over 25 years, and I grew up watching his show choirs perform in Disney World and a bunch of other places.  My mom is a classically-trained organist and is the music director at a church.  Growing up with two parents who love music and understand the creative process really helped me develop my craft!

Lamitschka:  What do you think about today's music scene versus its post and where do you see it going in the future?

Answer:  Because we live in a social media-and-streaming-driven world, today’s music scene definitely is different than in the past.  Because people do not buy music the way they used to, I think there will be more and more streaming outlet developments.  With today‘s technology, there are now ways to connect with fans all over the world via social media and live-streaming.  It is defnitely easier today to engage with more people and build a wide fan base in a shorter time frame than in the past!

Lamitschka:  If you had the chance to change something about the music industry, what would it be?

Answer:  While I definitely do like social media, I wish that booking gigs and gaining industry attention wasn’t so closely tied to how many followers someone has and that pure talent could more easily lead to performing opportunities and record deals.  The best singer/song doesn’t necessarily get the attention – whoever hast he most followers seems to always have an edge.

Lamitschka:  What was your big break that got you into the music business?

Answer:  I wouldn’t say there was one defining moment that really made me pursue music.  Singing and performing was something I always knew I had to do.  I’ve always felt called to use the voice and stage presence I’ve been given to make an impact, so, in each chapter of my life, I have pursued all possible opportunities to develop as an artist.  I’m loving the journey every step of the way!

Lamitschka:  What inspired you to become an artist?

Answer:  Singing has always been my first love, and I have always love the stage (whether that was my parents‘ living room couch or an actual venue).  I also feel that I have a responsibility to help others through my eating disorder recovery story, so I realized in high school that being an artist was much more than just having catchy songs.  The dream of becoming a singer transformed into the dream of becoming someone with music that could truly impact people’s lives.

Lamitschka:  What has been your greatest challenge in music business?

Answer: I am not a patient person at all lol.  I am very hard-working and don’t let no’s get me down, but it’s easy for me to get impatient when things don’t go according to my timetable.  I know the Lord sees the big picture, but it’s always a learning process to trust in His timing.  So I would say my greatest challenge is keeping a flexible mindset about my musical journey.

Lamitschka:  What moments in your career stand out in your memory as highlights and achievements which you are proud of?

Answer:  The two highlights that come most to mind are when my music video was added to CMT.com and when I made my national television debut, where I had the opportunity to perform my song, Little Girl in the Mirror, and share my eating disorder recovery story.  Those were both full-circle moments!

Lamitschka:  What message would you like to send your European fans?

Answer:  I can’t wait to meet you!  I message all of my new fans on social media and love to stay in touch with my current followers, so please feel free to reach out to me!  I really do love hearing more about you and your stories because you all help inspire me to keep creating and chasing this dream!
