Renee Stahl Interview by Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio Show

Lamitschka: Music has many new fans throughout Europe who may be hearing about you for the first time.  How would you describe yourself and the music you play to someone who has never seen or heard you?

Answer: I have been making music in many different genres, primarily music for children and families, along with trance music with DJs all over Europe.

Lamitschka: How was the last year for you? What were your highlights?

Answer:  Last year I was working with my project, Renee & Friends, on an album entitled Kindred.  It’s music for all ages.

Lamitschka: What is your latest CD and how’s it doing?

Answer:  The CD is Kindred, and it’s wonderful.  I was fortunate to work with some incredible friends, including Ziggy Marley, Chris Stills, Lisa Loeb, and Elizabeth Mitchell. The most exciting part for me is that my daughters are on this album.

Lamitschka: How did you choose the title for this CD? Is there a story behind the name?

Answer:  I wanted a word that was a link between family and friends. “Kindred” seemed to hit the spot!

Lamitschka: Do you write the songs yourself?  If not, how do you go about finding the songs for your CD?

Answer:  I have written many songs on this CD by myself along with some co-writers.  When choosing a cover song, it’s important to me that it’s something that I would say myself and that all ages will love.

Lamitschka:  Please tell us about the songs on your album (influences, etc.).

Answer:  The themes of the songs on this album are kindness, being who you are, and empowerment. Most of the songs I write have a feeling of universal love.

Lamitschka:  What is the difference between your last CD and your current one?

Answer: On the last CD, I had a different set of friends that I worked with. I am incredibly excited to share the voices of my daughters.  That’s the biggest difference.

Lamitschka:  What kind of songs do you like to record the most?

Answer:  I love recording songs with harmony and melodies I love. I love to record cover songs that I grew up on and want to share with my children.

Lamitschka:  You did a duet with Ziggy Marley. How did that happen to come about?

Answer:  I love Ziggy Marley. Not only has he released several CDs for adults, he also has put out a wonderful family album entitled Family Time.  My producer, Tom Rossi, had the idea to do a cover song by Cat Stevens, “Where Do the Children Play?”.  It feels incredibly relevant to the needs of our children in this day and age. We asked, and Ziggy said yes!

Lamitschka:  What do you think about today’s music industry?

Answer: I think it’s very interesting.  There are so many outlets for getting your music out there … streaming, etc.

Lamitschka:  Are you doing anything to take music beyond its current borders or are you happy where it is?

Answer: I have been working on a TV show for families.  It’s an extension of what I have been doing with my music.
