LAURA COX Interview by Christian Lamitschka for Country Music News International Magazine & Radio Show

Lamitschka:  Music has many new fans throughout Europe who may be hearing about you for the first time. How would you describe yourself and the music you play to someone who has never seen or heard you?

Answer:  I started uploading videos on Youtube 10 years ago, and people got very enthusiastic about it! My guitar videos quickly reached several millions views (almost 100 millions now), so it motivated me to keep on posting, to share my passion for guitar.
Then I started my rock band, which is my priority now, we tour all over Europe, and we're about to release our new album.

Lamitschka:  What is your latest CD and how's it doing?

Answer:  Our new CD is called Burning Bright, it will be out on November 8. We can't wait for the fans to listen to it, and we hope they like it as much as we do. We're really excited about this release.
We recorded it last January in a very cool studio in Belgium (ICP Studios), so it's about time it's finally out!

Lamitschka:  How did you choose the title for the CD?  Is there a story behind the name?

Answer:  It's not the title of a song... Actually, the idea of the name „Burning Bright“ came from one of our songs „Fire, Fire“. It reminded me of a poem by William Blake that goes like „Tyger Tyger, Burning Bright“. I had that name in mind, and thought it would be a good idea to draw a parallel between Blake's poem, and „Fire, Fire Burning Bright“.... but this title was a bit long, so we just ended up using „Burning Bright“, which defines really well this new album.

Lamitschka:  What is the difference between your last CD and your current one?

Answer:   This one is more personnal. I got more involved in the lyrics part, it's mostly about my experiences, my evolution. I felt that this album should talk to people, and mean somehting that's real. It's always better when people can identify to their own story.
Besides that, I think we also got better as musicians. We toured a lot between the recording of our 1st and our 2nd album, and I think you can hear that in the music.

Lamitschka:  What will your next single be?

Answer:  It should be a song called Freaking Out Loud. It's a really fun song, that we almost wrote and arranged during the recording session, and I think that's what's cool about it. It's a bit different from the rest of the album, and the vocals are more powerful. We'll soon shoot a video clip for this song, hope you like it!

Lamitschka:  What kind of songs do you like to record the most?

Answer:  I think I feel more comfortable playing southern songs. I love country as much as hard rock, so I have to be good at both, but my voice suits the country/southern style quite well. I don't often get to play telecasters, but I really like these guitars, their tone and their feel, and it's perfect for these kind of songs.

Lamitschka:  What do you think about today's music scene versus its post and where do you see it going in the future?

Answer:  We often hear people say „music was better before“... But I can't totally agree with that. Today's country and rock scene is full of great new artists. I recently discovered the Highwomen and I love them! As for the rock n' roll scene, I'm a big fan of Black Stone Cherry, Blackberry Smoke, etc. These are bands from the „new generation“, and that means that rock n' roll is far from dead! We still have years of great music ahead of us. It gives me hope for the future.

Lamitschka:  As an artist, you have so many tasks such as recording, touring, interviews. What do you like best, what's your favorite activity?

Answer:  Studio used to scare me! Since the recording of our last album, I feel more comfortable about it... but I still prefer being on tour with my band. It feels more natural to me. We get to meet new people every night, perfom in cool rock clubs or festivals. Tour life is really special and it's not easy, but I like it! That's the real thing, you can't lie about it, and people see who you really are.

Lamitschka:  What has been your greatest challenge in music business?

Answer: My greatest challenge was being accepted as a female frontwoman, in a male world. The rock n' roll scene is tough, and you don't get to see women really often. I feel like I have to prove that I can make it, as a girl, as a leader in a rock band. I have to work twice as hard to be taken seriously, and that's my challenge!

Lamitschka:  Who is your biggest critic, yourself or others?

Answer:  My biggest critic is myself! I can't stand to watch myself playing or singing in a video... I'm working hard, but I know „it's a long way to the top“. I've always conidered myself as a guitarist, more than a singer... but I'm trying to put both of these skills at the same level. Vocals are really important, that's the first thing people will notice when they listen to music. I think you can hear the difference in my vocals, between our 2 albums, and I'll keep on working on that!
