Ira Dean Nominated in First Round Oscar Picks for 'Best Original Song in a Movie'

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (January 17, 2017) –Hit songwriter, artist, producer and former member of award-winning trio Trick Pony, Ira Dean is representing country music in the first round of Oscar picks with his tune “I’m Back” which has been nominated for Best Original Song in a Movie. Co-written by Dean, Edwin McCain and Eric Hamilton, “I’m Back” appears in “Never Surrender: The Ed Ramsey Story”, a feature documentary that pays tribute to a WWII hero who earned a place in military lore for having led the last cavalry charge in U.S. military history.

Not only did Dean have a hand in writing the tune from McCain’s new EP, O EDWIN; WHERE ART THOU?, but he also played, sang BGV’s, engineered and co-produced (with Hamilton) the track in his home studio. Listen to “I’m Back” from Edwin McCain’s EP and “Never Surrender: The Ed Ramsey Story” HERE.

The news of the nomination came as quite the surprise for Dean, Hamiltion and McCain.

“The little song written by 3 friends about our demons and over coming them, recorded in my little studio with zero to no budget, without submitting it or promoting it, is all of a sudden on the Oscar's pick sheet for Best Original Song in Movie,” said Dean.

Dean, who was highly influenced and mentored by the Cash family, remembers a conversation between himself and Johnny Cash 15 years ago over two Winston Reds when Cash stated,
"Son when writing songs stick with the truth, people recognize the truth right away even though it mighta been years since they heard it.”

Dean is currently promoting his self-titled album, writing and playing shows across the country.
