Interview with Lonnieclaire for CM International.
Q: Music has many new fans throughout Europe who may be hearing about you for the first time. How would you describe yourself and the music you play to someone who has never seen or heard you?
LC: We have described as having a "layered sound" - drawing heavily on basic blues scales - and compared to eveything from "early" Pink Floyd to Robbie Fulks. At one point we did have three guitarists in the band and I think that original "dense" sound still seeps into the songs.
Q: Lamitschka: How was the last year for you? What were your highlights?
LC: Unbelievable! We re-formed the band and released "You're My A.N.G.E.L." - the record was mostly just me and Rick (re-united after a long hiatus) and we built something together and made the songs "real" again.
Q: Lamitschka: What is your latest CD and how's it doing?
LC: "You're My A.N.G.E.L." is the only record we have actually released. It has not been a success commercially but we are really happy with the way it turned out.
Q: Lamitschka: How did you choose the title for the CD? Is there a story behind the name?
LC: "You're My A.N.G.E.L.' is pretty random - spelling out "A.N.G.E.L." in the verse - like parents spell out bad words in front of their kids - and adding some lyrics about "not caring about dirty wings" and "soaring with us". We had a song I guess about not giving up on somebody even if they've been beaten up a bit. I liked the song so then that just became the name of the record.
Lamitschka: Do you write the songs yourself? If not, how do you go about finding the songs for your CD?
LC: We write, play, record and mix everything ourselves. Are we control freaks? Nah - just music broke and can't afford fancy producer.
Lamitschka: Please tell us about the songs on your album (influences, etc).
LC: Nine songs about fairy tales and bashing your head against the wall trying to build something. I promise you there's nothing out there like You're My A.N.G.E.L. (Factory Fast Records via Amazon / BandCamp). It is a true D.I.Y., original sounding, genre-confounding rock album.
Lamitschka: What is the difference between your last CD and your current one?
LC: We fooled around with some EPs and then pulled them (from availability) We don't have a polished sound. But working on the album was really rewarding. Of course it's awkward sounding (made on a shoe-string budget - not even professionally mixed or mastered) but I think it's a real unique release. I actually think we caught a big break with You're My A.N.G.E.L.
Lamitschka: Your current single is being played by radio. What do you feel is special about this song that makes people want to hear it?
LC: The limited internet radio play we've got has been great. We want everybody to hear the band. Our sound won't be for everyone but it'd be cool if listeners got to decide for themselves if they liked it.
Lamitschka: What will your next single be?
LC: Our song 'New Mexico Gold' is featured on The Americana Retrofit CD - so we're sharing space with Tokyo Rosenthal and Jiggley Jones and many others. The compilation (should be out later this month) is the the biggest thing we've ever done.
Lamitschka: What kind of songs do you like to record the most
LC: Anything that pushes us creatively is the best!
Lamitschka: What is your favorite song among all the songs you have recorded and what's the story behind it?
LC: My personal favorite song is an oldie called 'Olive Kilmer' that I've played a million times. It's just a poem I stole and put it to a basic four-chord structure but the song definitely got me over a hump at the time.
Lamitschka: How much creative control do you have over your music?
LC: 100% but not because we're control freaks. We are just off by ourselves sort of living in our own little bubble.
Lamitschka: Who inspires you musically and how deep do your musical roots run?
LC: I love Neil Young, X, Yo La Tengo, Chilton - the classics - but also bands the label is working with like Rin Lennon / Monogroove and Nelson Sobral (he's in NorthStar and some other bands).
Lamitschka: Any thoughts of retirement ahead?
LC: Nah! we've had our mini "comeback" and I promise we're here to stay. Our new LP called "Creating a Mixdown" will be coming out soon (mastered by Sobral at Melting Pot Studios in Toronto). That record will be...(spoiler alert) more semi-awkward, raw, D.I.Y. rock. So I think its very safe to say Lonnieclaire will be keeping it "very real" in 2015.
