CD: HILARY SCOTT - Freight Train Love

HILARY SCOTT
Freight Train Love
Freight Train Love - Help - Get Your Love - Diamonds - Losing You - Flowers On Mars - Whiskey Bottle Day - If You Don't Love Me - Lotta Love - Didn't Make It Alive

This very gifted beautiful and lovely country girl came all the way from St. Louis, Missouri, to LeMars in 2014 for some Rural Roots Music Commission honor and respect.  She's right back with another incredibly lovely CD, many of the songs her own originals.  I do enjoy listening to older country music artists that stay with the original 'seed' of what country music really is, but I also like to hear what young people without millions of dollars to make them stars also do with the 'seed.'  I once heard it took 15-million dollars to make Garth Brooks a star.  Not sure that's true, but I'm very glad Hilary Scott does not have that same kind of money.  I'm afraid it would ruin her very beautiful originality, that she expresses so well, with and without love in these songs.  Believe it or not, I believe the (I believe it's an old Hammond) organ on these tracks add not distract from her explicit and stone-cold truth-telling voice revealing the win-lose side of love.  Some call Hilary a 'folk' or 'root' singer, and yes I believe that could be the case, but she's much more than that.  Hilary sings the truth, the very 'seed' that made original country music so likable.  No 'phony' here, no need for it, or that 15-million dollars.  Why?  Because the truth is better, and Hilary has that in her voice, her being, her 'reason' for being in music in the first place.  You can probably see that I'm a 'believer' especially in the original and very satisfying 'sound' of Hilary Scott.  There's lots of modern expression from the instruments on this CD, but it's not loud or distorting.  It doesn't 'hide' the lovely voice of Hilary, and it remains 'expressive' just as it should.  What a nice surprise for me to hear this lovely girl's voice, imagination, purpose, dedication, and 'music seeds' to close out my 'listening' time for today.  Thanks Hilary, get ready because this CD goes to the Rural Roots Music Commission too.  It's early in the season, but get set and ready to go.  Look out Alison Kraus, you have competition.
